Mardi Gras in NJ: Where to celebrate like the Big Easy

There’s a lot to love about Mardi Gras. Filled with fruity drinks, Cajun-Creole food, colorful beads, fun music and more, it’s a day to let loose that New Orleans has taken to new heights.

However, those living in Central Jersey don’t have to miss out on the festivities just because New Orleans is much further than a bead’s throw away from the Garden State.

Here in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Union counties, we have plenty of local Mardi Gras celebrations that will make you feel like you’re in the heart of the Big Easy. Check out these local Mardi Gras parties that will make for a celebration you won’t forget.

Verve Restaurant, Somerville

With three days of festivities planned, Mardi Gras is no joke at Verve, a French restaurant and speakeasy-style bar in the heart of Somerville. From March 3-5, the eatery will host mask biddings, music and food and drink specials with some proceeds to benefit the Matheny Medical & Educational Center.

On Sunday, the celebration gets serious with Verve’s fifth annual Gumbo Cook-Off and Buffet, where home chefs can bring two gallons of their best gumbo to Verve by 1 p.m. for a chance to win. There will be a $15 cover charge from 1-5 p.m. Plus, on Fat Tuesday, visitors can expect food and drink specials, prizes, and of course, some gaudy decorations.

Celebrate: 18 E. Main St., Somerville; 908-707 8655, bit.ly/2SqZqKJ; March 3-5 with $15 Sunday cover charge.
